Aspire Meet Day System
Use race duration—not a runner label—to decide what belongs before, during, and after a high-school 5K.
Across finish times, a typical short 5K is supported by adequate eating beforehand and a practical plan for the whole meet day—not a required start-line gel.
The fuelling problem at a high school meet is not the race; it is everything around it.
Do this:
Try this week: Count the hours from the bus to the ride home next meet, and pack food for all of them.
Not true: you need a gel to finish a 5K. Your breakfast already did that job.
Start with the food category. Tap a package for one recognizable brand example, then swap within the category for access, tolerance, culture, budget, and allergens.

| Event Duration | Carbohydrate During | Your Athlete |
|---|---|---|
| Under ~45 min | Not required | Every high school XC and distance race |
| ~45-75 min | Small amounts, or a mouth rinse | Not a high school 5K |
| 1-2.5 hr | Regular intake becomes useful | Not a high school 5K |
| 2.5 hr and up | The marathon literature lives here | Where most advice comes from |

Carbohydrate swallowed during exercise has to empty from the stomach, absorb, circulate, and then be burned; the rates that matter arrive deep into long events, not in minute two.
Position statements put in-event carbohydrate at not needed for efforts under roughly 45 minutes, and a high-school 5K is less than half of that.
The real lever for a short race is glycogen built across the week and restored by breakfast; chronic under-fueling erases both and is invisible on race morning.
When to use this
Before you spend a budget, a parent meeting, or a week of race prep on the wrong twenty minutes.
Finish before you close this page
Pack one familiar primary option and one delay backup, then confirm who carries the bag.
Done looks like: A packed-bag photo or staff check shows the plan is physically ready.
Where to go next
From one handout to a repeatable team system
Coach: Open the matching week, deliver the team talk, assign the staff owner, and verify the written action.
Family: Send the editable family message, share the handout, and keep the same next action visible in the family portal.
