An athlete indicates that food is unavailable, unaffordable, restricted at home, or inaccessible because of transportation, housing, work, or school logistics.

Observable signs and patterns

The athlete repeatedly has no breakfast, lunch, snack, or recovery food.
Food access changes on weekends, travel days, or month-end.
The athlete relies on teammates, hides food, or avoids team meals because of cost.
The athlete reports housing, transportation, work, or household instability.

May be routine

One forgotten item with reliable access otherwise.
A simple storage or timing fix resolves the issue.

Needs attention

Access is repeatedly absent or unpredictable.
The athlete is symptomatic, reports neglect or unsafe conditions, or cannot meet basic needs.

Coach boundary: Coach scope is observe, protect, communicate, and refer. Do not diagnose, order testing, prescribe treatment, promise confidentiality, store detailed health histories, or override the school emergency action plan or a qualified clinician's participation instructions. Coaches support access and use school safeguarding procedures; they do not investigate household finances, determine benefit eligibility, or make promises outside approved programs.
