Under 10 Minutes
Use one fast default on school mornings
- Fast wins: PB banana toast, yogurt parfait, cereal, overnight oats.
- Pick one breakfast the athlete can repeat on a normal Tuesday.
Before a Run
Keep pre-run food light and easy to digest
- Easy run soon: banana, toast, applesauce, or a small bowl of oats.
- With more time, use a fuller familiar breakfast the athlete tolerates.
After a Run
Turn breakfast into recovery when the run is done
- When ready: eggs and toast, yogurt and granola, or cereal and milk.
- Recovery breakfast needs fluid too, so start drinking early.
Context
Overview
Breakfast does not need to be fancy to be useful. Some athletes wake up hungry; others have low appetite because of timing, medication, gastrointestinal comfort, stress, sleep, or reasons that are not obvious. Believe what the athlete reports and build from foods, drinks, amounts, and timing they tolerate.
Start with an option that feels manageable and make a second opportunity available later. No one needs to earn praise for finishing a portion or explain their intake in front of teammates.
Why breakfast matters
Depending on the athlete's schedule and total intake, breakfast can help:
Altitude can change appetite, thirst, training demand, and fluid logistics, but it does not create one predictable consequence from a skipped breakfast. Use the athlete's symptoms and overall pattern, not elevation alone, to decide what support is needed.
provide an early opportunity for carbohydrate, protein, and fluid
make food available before a long school or work block
support a daily fueling pattern that fits later training
reduce reliance on one large meal late in the day
