Set access first
A hydration plan starts with bottles, refill, and breaks
- Name where bottles stay and where athletes refill before warm-up.
- Publish drink breaks in the practice plan instead of improvising them.
Change the plan
Heat, duration, intensity, and acclimatization change access
- Hotter, longer, or harder sessions need more drink opportunities.
- During new heat, shorten the session while athletes acclimatize.
Why not the chart
Color charts and scale changes do not run the team plan
- Vitamins, food, and how recently you drank all move the color.
- Aspire does not use body checks or weigh-ins to judge hydration.
Overview
Don't chase urine color. Athletes do not need team weigh-ins or one fluid number; they need a system that makes drinking possible and changes when the day changes.
For a school program, that system has five parts:
That is more useful than a color chart because a coach can actually run it.
every athlete can bring a bottle;
the refill point is open and named;
drink breaks are planned before warm-up;
heat, duration, intensity, and acclimatization can change the plan; and
symptoms trigger action, not another hydration lecture.
Before practice: make access real
A reminder to “hydrate” is not a plan if bottles are in lockers, the fountain is locked, or nobody knows when the first break is coming.
Before athletes arrive, confirm:
- where bottles will stay;
- where and when athletes can refill;
- who checks weather and the school heat policy;
- when the planned breaks occur; and
- which adult leads the response if an athlete becomes ill.
Athletes should also be allowed to ask for an earlier break without earning it or explaining a private medical reason in front of teammates.
